What is your history in the industry?

I began working in the jewellery trade in my parent’s jewellery store in Townsville. I worked on the repair counter fitting watch bands, and booking in jewellery and watch repairs. This is where I grew to fall in love with jewellery. I started my apprenticeship in 1976 on the Sunshine Coast and went on to work in Sydney, Brisbane, Noosa, Byron Bay, just to name a few. I have also been fortunate to travel extensively to trade fairs across the world, including Italy, Hong Kong and Thailand, as well as buying diamonds in Antwerp Belgium. In the 1980’s, I was most influenced by Italian born, Sydney based jeweller, Nicola Cerrone and still love his work today.

When did you discover you wanted to be a jeweller?

I became interest in jewellery working through our family business. I was inspired by the pieces I saw in our jewellery store and became interested in the process of how these incredible pieces came to life.

What are your favourite stones to work with?

My favourite stones to work with are tourmalines and sapphires. The huge range of colours, colour combinations and the fire and brilliance that can be seen from these stones still amazes me. It brings me great joy creating pieces with these incredible gemstones.

Why is making jewellery so special to you?

I get a lot of satisfaction in the journey of a jewellery piece coming to life. From designing a piece in my head, sketching this on paper, and then being able to turn that into a physical reality, is an amazing process. It’s so satisfying to see the look on a clients’ face when they see the finished piece that started with a conversation and a sketch become a reality.

Where could we find you on the weekends?

On weekends you can find me sailing or surfing our great Gold Coast breaks. I love the water and enjoy living close to the ocean.
